While López Obrador’s event took place in Los Angeles, a demonstration against Donald Trump was held in Mexico in several of its states.
President of Mexico’s leftist National Regeneration Movement Andres Manuel López Obrador met with followers in Los Angeles, California to discuss President Donald Trump‘s anti-immigration rhetoric and plans to build a border wall.
“I think the wall and the demagoguery of patriotism are no match for the dignity and humanity of the American people,” Obrador said at the demonstration.
He said California is “a refuge and a blessing for immigrants,” adding “Long Live California!” to hundreds of applauding supporters in Plaza Olvera.
“When they want to build a wall to segregate populations, or when the word ‘foreigner’ is used to insult, denigrate and discriminate against our fellow human beings, it goes against humanity, it goes against intelligence and against history,” he said.

While López Obrador’s event took place in Los Angeles, a demonstration against Donald Trump was held in Mexico in several of its states.

“If the Mexican government does not put a complaint before the United Nations in the coming days, then we will do it ourselves,” he said, claiming to have made the suggestion repeatedly to President Peña Nieto; however, the federal government has not answered the politician’s request.
The US media outlet Hi99 described Lopez Obrador’s visit to the United States as a “political move” since the politician is “looking ahead to the presidential election next year.”
“Lopez Obrador sought to tap widespread discontent with Mexico’s ruling party (including Peña Nieto)” in addition to the resentment Mexicans feel about Donald Trump so as to add points to his eventual candidacy.
